What is hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation is a surgical procedure used to treat hair loss or baldness. During the procedure, hair follicles are taken from a donor area, typically the back or sides of the scalp where hair is still thick, and transplanted to the areas of the scalp where there is hair loss or thinning. The objective of hair transplantation is to restore a natural hairline and increase hair density in the recipient area.

Not everyone is a candidate for hair transplantation, which requires careful consideration of factors — such as the patient’s age, degree of hair loss, hair texture, and the potential for future hair loss — by a licensed doctor with a specialty in aesthetics and hair restoration surgery.

The procedure is often performed under local anaesthesia and is generally considered safe, with most patients experiencing minimal discomfort and a relatively quick recovery period. In the first two to three weeks following a hair transplantation procedure, a series of changes can be expected as the transplanted hair and the recipient area go through the initial healing process. Note that individual experiences can vary, and the timeline of these changes may differ from person to person.

At the Dr Tyng Tan Aesthetics and Hair Clinic, we provide a refined version of the FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) method. This service has introduced three different ways of performing FUE such as the fully shaved technique, the partially shaved technique, and the non-shaved technique.

FUE is the direct transfer of hair from a healthy donor area to bald or thinning areas on the head. It uses specific tools to extract individual follicular units. The doctor will also have to prepare it first prior to implantation. Due to the involvement of all the important parts of the hair follicles during transplantation, there is a big chance for growth and survival.

Common Reasons for Hair Loss

Excessive hair Loss can be a real blow for those suffering from this progressive condition. Beyond the physical change is a psychological impact that also hurts self-esteem. Therefore, the search for a solution is not only for vanity, but for overall mind-body health.

We all lose hair on a daily basis, but not usually in full clumps. The average person loses 50-100 hairs per day and most of the time they will grow back without any intervention needed besides patience. Men experience some degree of gradual hair loss in their lifetime due to the changes in androgen levels as a result of ageing. Women may also experience hair loss as they age.

Hair loss can be caused by a variety of factors, both genetic and environmental. Here are some common reasons for hair loss:

Genetics (Androgenetic Alopecia)

Also known as male-pattern baldness or female-pattern baldness, this type of hair loss is largely hereditary. It occurs due to a genetic predisposition to sensitivity to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that can shrink hair follicles and lead to gradual hair thinning.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations due to factors such as pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, and thyroid disorders can contribute to hair loss. Conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also cause hair thinning.

Medical Conditions

Certain medical conditions and diseases, such as alopecia areata (an autoimmune disorder), scalp infections, and certain skin conditions, can result in hair loss. Medical treatments like chemotherapy can lead to temporary hair loss as well.

Stress and Physical Trauma

Severe emotional or physical stress, such as a major illness, surgery, or traumatic events, can cause a condition known as telogen effluvium. This results in a temporary shedding of hair several months after the triggering event.

Nutritional Deficiencies

Inadequate intake of essential nutrients, particularly iron, zinc, biotin, and protein, can lead to hair loss. Nutritional imbalances can disrupt the hair growth cycle.

Medications

Certain medications, such as those used for cancer, arthritis, depression, heart problems, gout, and high blood pressure, can cause hair loss as a side effect.

Poor Hair Care Practices

Overuse of hair styling products, excessive heat exposure from hair dryers and straighteners, and tight hairstyles that pull on the hair (like tight braids or ponytails) can lead to hair breakage and damage.

Ageing

As individuals age, the rate of hair growth can slow down, and hair may become thinner and more brittle.

Autoimmune Conditions

Conditions like lupus and certain types of thyroid disorders can cause hair loss by affecting the body’s immune system and hormonal balance.

Weight Loss

Rapid and extreme weight loss, often associated with crash diets or eating disorders, can result in hair shedding due to nutritional deficiencies and stress on the body.

Environmental Factors

Exposure to pollutants, UV radiation, and other environmental stressors can weaken hair and contribute to hair loss.

Family History

Family history plays a significant role in determining your susceptibility to certain types of hair loss.

Hair transplant cost in Singapore

The cost of a hair transplant in Singapore can vary widely based on several factors, including the clinic or medical facility you choose, the extent of your hair loss, the technique used, the experience of the surgeon, and the number of grafts required for the procedure. Singapore is known for its high-quality medical services, and as a result, the cost of procedures like hair transplants can be relatively higher compared to some other countries.

Here’s a general overview of the factors influencing the cost of hair transplants in Singapore:

Clinic Reputation and Expertise

Reputable clinics with experienced and skilled surgeons may charge higher fees due to their track record of successful procedures and patient satisfaction.

Type of Procedure

The specific technique used for the hair transplant, whether it’s Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), can affect the cost. FUE tends to be more labour-intensive and might be priced accordingly.

Number of Grafts

The number of grafts you require for your transplant directly influences the cost. Grafts refer to individual hair follicles, and the more grafts needed to achieve the desired results, the higher the cost will be.

Severity of Hair Loss

The extent of your hair loss and the area that needs to be covered by the transplant will also impact the cost. More extensive hair loss might require a larger number of grafts and sessions, increasing the overall cost.

Geographic Location

The location of the clinic within Singapore can affect pricing. Clinics located in more central or upscale areas might have higher operating costs, which could be reflected in the fees.

Additional Services

Some clinics might offer additional services as part of the package, such as post-operative care, follow-up appointments, and specific types of anaesthesia. These factors can influence the overall cost.

FUE Hair Transplant Timeline

How long is the recovery time for a hair transplant? Know what the road to recovery is like after an FUE hair transplant in the video below. The experience—from surgery to recovery—may vary depending on the patient, so consulting with a medical professional is a must.

Keep in mind that individual experiences can vary, but generally follow a similar pattern. FUE is a minimally invasive hair transplantation technique that involves the extraction of individual hair follicles from the donor area and their transplantation into the recipient area.

Frequently Asked Questions

When hair shedding happens, does the hair get thin? Does it ever grow back?

Hair shedding is a normal occurrence as the hair goes through different cycles. This means that it’s expected that we shed between 50-100 strands everyday.

However, shedding can also occur as a result of certain conditions or external factors. Male pattern baldness or androgenetic alopecia is one of the conditions that can result in hair loss. This is caused by a certain type of hormone, called DHT (Dihydrotestosterone), which causes the hair to thin and shed in a specific pattern.

Does sleeplessness or lack of sleep accelerate hair loss?

Sleep is essential for our body to regenerate. While you sleep, the body works to support brain function and maintenance of physical health. Sleeplessness is very likely to impact the process of hair growth and may even be linked directly to hair loss and thinning hair. It can heighten stress levels which is detrimental to the hair follicle.

Prolonged stress can also have a negative impact on the skin and its capacity to function properly, directly impacting the hair follicle.

Do hair transplants look natural?

As hair transplant techniques evolve, it’s expected that results should come out looking natural. This largely relies on the competencies and experience of your surgeon of choice. You can go to anybody with a licence to do this type of surgery, but it’s up to you to scrutinise their brand of aesthetics.

There are also techniques that can ensure that any signs of surgery are well concealed. For this goal, patients are advised to get an FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction). However, there are certain refinements in this method such as the partially shaved FUE and no-shave FUE techniques, which is appropriate for those who wish to be more discreet with their hair transplant process.

Furthermore, there are also certain wound closure techniques to minimise scarring, especially with the “strip method” or FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) method. The trichophytic closure is one approach that will help improve the appearance of your hair transplant results where scarring doesn’t easily reveal that you had some work done. It’s a type of wound closure where hair can grow through the margin of the incision, thereby reducing scar visibility.

Does donor hair grow back?

In a surgical hair transplant, the entire follicle is removed. Some hair may grow back in the donor site but it’s likely that it will have a shorter growth phase. That is, these hair will grow to be more fine and fall off faster than surrounding hair.

Yes, it can. A few factors come into play to determine if hair grows back, and how long it takes normal hair growth to resume from the donor area. The type of extraction, whether it’s FUE or FUT, has an effect as well as how you take care of your donor area post-hair transplant surgery.

Does hair transplant last forever?

Hair transplant results are long-lasting, and are considered to be permanent. This also explains why it’s a successful hair loss treatment. These transplanted hairs are resistant to hair follicles to fill in thinning or balding areas, and these grafts are resistant to hormones that cause hair loss (DHT) – hence they are considered permanent. The transplanted hairs will continue to grow even though surrounding non-transplanted hairs will continue to miniaturise and shed.
