How to Get Your Skin Party-Ready for the Holidays!

The holiday season is right around the corner, and with it are invitations coming in left and right. If your calendar is all penciled out with parties to attend, make sure your skin is at its best! But with all the facial treatments in Singapore today, where do you start?

We’ve made it easier for you—here’s how you can get your skin ready for shindigs to come!

Home Skin Care

Achieving or maintaining beautiful skin all starts with good skin care. As they say, it doesn’t take a miracle but commitment. So, if you are still catching up, here’s a quick run through the basics.

Wash your face properly

Washing your face seems straightforward, but most of us are unaware  of how to do it right. Your soap-and-water routine may be convenient, but it is not enough. To properly cleanse the face without compromising skin health, the American Academy of Dermatology suggests the following:

• Use a gentle, non-abrasive cleanser

• Use lukewarm water from start to finish

• Avoid scrubbing to prevent irritation

• Limit washing to twice a day, and after you sweat

For those who wear makeup, double cleansing is recommended. The first step involves the use of a milk or oil-based makeup remover to effectively dissolve makeup and debris. The second step is where you use a foaming cleanser to rid the skin of dirt, bacteria, yeast, and oil.

Proper skin cleansing may seem trivial, but it’s when you overlook the small things that you find yourself with major skin problems in the future. Dry skin, acne, and acne scars are just some of the results of poor cleansing techniques.

The use of a facial toner is the next step after washing your face. Originally, toners were designed to restore the pH balance of your skin after being exposed to cleansers and harsh soaps. However, a lot of toners available today go beyond their basic roles. Now you can find hybrid versions with newer formulations like toner-serums which contains more gel or lotion textures.

With all these variations in ingredients and properties, there is a toner for different skin types. Some are formulated to help cut down on oil production, while some have more hydrating ingredients.

So, why is this an important step in basic skin care?

Apart from restoring the pH balance, it preps the skin for creams or serums that are applied afterwards. It’s an essential in-between step which allows the skin to absorb more of the product, making it more effective in creating the desired results.

With dust, arid conditions, UV rays, and the humidity in Singapore all bearing down on your skin, moisturizers should have a special place in your daily skin care. It restores skin hydration and covers small fissures, creating a soothing film that protects the skin from friction. It is the essence of healthy and younger-looking skin.

Finding the right moisturizer is a matter of trial and error. However, the right time and the right way of applying can help you reap maximum benefits. These products work best when you apply them right after a shower. They should be lightly applied on moist skin along the direction of your hair follicles.

Take Skin Care Up a Notch

Your repertoire of skin care treatments may give you a head start, but you can always boost results through professional care. It can address issues where your basic skin care routine falls short. It doesn’t work like magic, but scheduling treatments at least 4 weeks ahead of an event gives you enough wiggle room.

So, Let’s take it by skin concern and discuss which treatment would be suitable.

Acne is a common problem that requires an early treatment plan. If your skin is breaking out now, avoid picking or squeezing to prevent scarring and hyperpigmentation. There are several treatments for acne, but you must understand that they all take time. Your options include:

Topical treatments (Retinoids, Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, Glycolic Acid, or Topical Antibiotics)

Oral Treatments (oral contraceptives, antibiotics, spironolactone)

If basic skin care routine is not cutting it and your current acne treatment is ineffective even after 12 weeks, you might have to consult your doctor for a new treatment.

However, if your breakout comes in a cystic form (the throbbing kind that is nestled deep within the skin), cortisone injections serve as quick fixes. They can shrink the acne within 4-8 hours which will continue to improve over time. However, they don’t work on regular pimples and on cysts that contain pus.

Skin hyperpigmentation may be in the form of melasma, acne scars and other diffused skin darkening. If you want to sport that holiday glow, your topical products will need a boost. The treatment for this skin concern falls into three categories:

Topical agents

• Combination topical therapy (ex. Hydroquinone + tretinoin + corticosteroid)

• Retinoids

Chemical Peels

• Alpha hydroxy acid (ex. Glycolic and mandelic acids)

• Jessner’s peel (salicylic acid + lactic acid + resorcinol)

• Fractional lasers

• Photofacials

Topical agents are first line treatments that target the surface layer of the skin. For a more intense action, you can go to the next line of treatment which includes chemical peels. They come in different formulations (light, medium or deep) to address the varying severity of hyperpigmentation. Peels remove old and pigmented skin cells that cause your poor complexion, and speed up cell renewal. Schedule your chemical peel session at least a week or a month before an event.

Another option, which is also referred to as the last line of defence against hyperpigmentation, are lasers and photofacials. These devices are designed to selectively target hyperpigmented areas and use heat to dissolve the pigment on a deeper level. Most of the time, they require several sessions to achieve optimum results, but you can already see improvements along the way. Therefore, the earlier you book your appointments, the better.

Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Dermal fillers, anti-wrinkle injections, and lasers are your non-invasive options to address fine lines and wrinkles.

For dermal fillers, having your facial injections done at least two weeks before an event will be enough time for the filler to settle well. To plump up your lips, give it a good three weeks.

For anti-wrinkle injections, the results will already be noticeable a few days after treatment, but give yourself two weeks for any redness to fade.

For lasers, the time allowance will vary depending on the device used. Usually, you need to give it around 3-6 weeks. Don’t compare results to surgery, because lasers will not create dramatic change especially with just one treatment. Generally, lasers need more than one session to achieve significant improvement.  Therefore, it is advisable if you could prepare for it months ahead.
